P: Film cast availability

This is a screenshot of an email my member sent to our actors asking for their availability. We are deciding to start filming over the christmas holidays so we are contacting them via email. We also will create a WhatsApp group chat with our actors as it will be more convenient when reaching out to them. 



P: Horror experimental video

over the holidays I experimented with (free) stock footages I have found and put it together creating an abstract narrative. I explored sound, editing, colour grading, using filters such as 'day into night' to help me create a mysterious, eerie atmosphere. Simple cuts and using slow motion and fast forward effects gave the video more of scary feeling as it is very unexpected, creating tension and enigma. This gives me more confidence as to how I want my editing done specifically for my final film Sakkaku. As I am now familiar with these simple editing techniques it pushes me to now try more complex editing and use different technologies for example, using the green screen and then editing a background on to it.

R: BFI Reflection

The trip to BFI focus was on representation. we looked at ways social groups were represented in media texts such as film, adverts, school. We looked at ethnic minorities such as black people, are studied the way they were shown for example, Beyonce's music video 'formation' sh was represented as a independent woman, somone who owned her race e.g. the lyrics 'I like my baby heir with baby hair and Afros, I like my negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils' connotes that black persons features are not somewhat ideal to the media preservative of beauty. However, here we have Beyonce confronting how there is nothing wrong with it and nothing is better than the other. The music video also had multiples of connotations of Malcolm x, with the 'x' formation, Beyonce aslso stands on a police car partially submerged in water with a narrator asking, “What about New Orleans?” This focuses on the lack of attention and care paid to residents in the ninth ward who lost their family members, homes and property to a natural disaster. Towards the end of the video, an African-American child dances in front of a row of Caucasian police officers, and he raises his arms. The police officers lift their arms, and the clip transitions to graffiti of the statement “Stop shooting us.”
Black people used to have small roles and not much status but now they taking greater roles and empowering the media industries so for our film we have our main character who is black, and we wanted to show other ethic people are now having more greater roles and we wanted our film to be diverse.  

We also looked at schools and black pupils achievement, how black pupils were represented and labelled as low achievers, and unlikely to go to university. We then watch clips of BBC One Citizen Khan, which we look at the representation of muslims and how the show resented them, through this gave us an insight how the media portrays different cultures, social groups, ethnic minorities.

R: Own research - editing

As my group and I are in the process of producing a short horror film, I started surfing YouTube, watching a lot of Horror openings, short films and especially music videos, although we are producing a short film, I wanted to get inspired by music videos as our short film duration is 5 minutes, which a lot of music videos tend to be. So I watched many music videos and short films, to see the way the way they explore their editing under a short time, so I can get an idea of how I can present my editing, camera shots and movement, mise-en-scene and sound under the time I have. 

I found a website, which tells me about colour schemes, I had ideas about using coloured filters for my horror film and so i decided to look in to it.

Colour can impact us mentally and physically, regularly without us staying alert, and can be utilized as a strong device inside a story. Knowledge gives you control, and control implies you can use and manipulate colour to give your work an effective and enjoyable edge. Having the capacity to use colour to create harmony, or tension within a scene, or to bring attention to a key visual theme can be used to remarkable effect. A strong red colour has been shown to raise blood pressure, while a blue colour has a calming effect. Some colours are distinctly associated with a location or place, while others give a sense of time or period. This has given me the idea to use colours to manipulate the audience emotions. For a horror using colours such as red will create a lot of enigma and signify danger or death.

These music video's used a lot of red filters, which create an intense, captivating feel, which I want my horror film to have. It also made me question the colour scheme I want in my horror e.g. having it black and white, or natural colours, or even isolating colours such as red. through this i can create enigma and focus on red, to connote that the film is dark and sinister. 

This clip is a music video by NCT-U- Seventh Sense, it focuses on solid colour filters which also play tricks with the smooth transitions and editing. Going back to my film, where the protagonist is running and flashbacks are continuously interfering with the scene, I was thinking of filtering the flashbacks, as it is the key information of the film.

This clip, Infinite- Bad, has inspired me in a number of ways. As you can see it starts off with a male running, which is also the narrative of my film. They used slow pace and fast pace editing which really created an intense feel, as the music build up. It also had the red filter flashing in which highlighted the build up creating enigma as it contrasted with the teal and dark colours. Furthermore, the camera shot used gave me ideas on how I can show the protagonist running away. The close up of the legs, as it pans, it also later on tracks the body- creating tension

For transitions and narrative purposes I was thinking of how we could use glitching, pixelated ProStatic effects, this gives the idea of confusion and a puzzle going through the protagonists head which supports the psychological genre.
This clip shows how I want to use these effects, and many camera shots and angles under a short time.
